not only was she the number one agent in her office, but also the number two agent in the entire city. But let me emphasize, it all started with a single goal. That one goal laid the foundation for a completely revitalized real estate career. Today she’s richer, wiser and much happier. That’s gratifying, and it’s the reason I love my job. I get to help agents uncover their true desires, and turn them into goals so they are happier. Goal-setting is not just helpful, it’s essential for happiness. Ask any psychologist: people who make progress toward meaningful goals live happier more satisfied lives than those who don’t. If you don’t have goals, take a minute to finish this article for four tips that can get you started on your own path to success, and more importantly, happiness. All you have to do is remember the acronym G.O.A.L. “Take heed: you do not find what you do not seek.” English proverb MIREALTOR® | JUNE 2014 12 Go with a goal that touches, moves and inspires you. Your goal needs to set a fire in both your heart and brain – you need to desire it as much as you desire your next breath. For my client above, failure simply wasn’t an option. Also, make your goal specific and clear. The best goal will work like a magnet – it’ll help pull your toward your desired result. Opt for a goal that challenges you beyond what you believe to be your current ability. My client above had never been number one in her office so that was a great goal for her. It stretched her and molded her into a new person. Allow yourself permission to fully accept your goal. How do you do that? Three steps: 1. You write it down. There’s a huge power in writing your goals down. Experts have proven in study after study that people are much more likely to complete tasks that are written. 2. Review them at least monthly. This keeps you on task with what you need to do next. 3. Share your goal with someone who can hold you accountable (a coach, a mentor, a mastermind group or fellow agent). Love the process. Once you set your goal, you create strategies and tactics that move you toward your goal. Those steps become your daily to-do items, but sometimes agents forget to enjoy the journey. Instead they get stuck thinking about the future and what their lives will be like when they reach their goal. Guess what, they never reach their goal because they’re not focused on (and enjoying) each step. Quality work comes from your focus and attention on your daily work. Learn to appreciate every single step along your new path toward success. Let me hear from you. Are you achieving everything you set out to achieve for 2014? If not, why not? Could it be your goal isn’t right for you? Do you know it is perfectly okay to drop a goal? If you have a goal, is it inspiring? Does it move you? If not, what can you do today to change things for the better in your business?
