Health & Lifestyle · Lucid dreams Live your wildest dreams with lucidity Have you ever wondered what fire tastes like? Or how it feels to fly? Have you always wanted to have complete control, where you can do what you want, how you want, when you want? Have you ever wanted to change the rules? Well, through the act of lucid dreaming and mindfulness, you can. Many people are lucky enough to experience lucid dreams, where they can touch, taste and feel the unknown. But with only 1 in 5 people lucid dreaming each month, we want to know, what is a ‘lucid dream’ exactly. What is a lucid dream? A lucid dream is a dream that the dreamer can consciously control. It is the ability to put the deepest and darkest areas of your brain to use and turn your dream in to an alternative reality. Beverly D’Urso was five years old when she first started to lucid dream.“In one very powerful lucid dream, I found myself alone in front of a campfire,” she explains vividly. “I took this as another challenge and stepped right into the centre of the roaring fire. I was having fun and decided to try eating the flames; they tasted salty. Next, I decided that I would fly up and merge with the sun. I sped upwards like superman, accelerating rapidly. It was very intense and yet blissful.” What is lucid dreaming good for? Not only is lucid dreaming often used as therapy and a method of escapism, it can also help you to overcome personal setbacks. Once the novelty of being lucid wears off, you can use this type of dream for problem solving, facing your fears, developing your sense of self, increasing your creativity and of course, the chance to explore your unconscious mind. Indeed, early bedtimes have never looked so appealing… So, how can we experience one? Lucid dreams tend to come more naturally to those that are mindful, as the mental habits that we practice during the day continue in our dreams. Mindfulness and meditation together is the perfect recipe to increase your chance of having a successful lucid dream. As meditation helps you to reach a harmonious state of relaxation, not only do you become more self aware, it also becomes easier to recognise when you are dreaming. Mindspace Magazine · Issue 01 · 19
