Social Media Editor
As social media editor, if you can like it, follow it or
retweet it, then I have probably already done it. So when
the team told me that I had to give up Facebook, a little voice
in my head was screaming ‘nooo’. I went cold turkey by deleting
the app the night before.
One thing that I learnt very early in was how regularly I flick through
my timeline out of boredom. I kept finding myself lingering inside
my social media folder and hovering where Facebook
used to be.
Despite the lure of those addictive cat videos, I restrained
and came out of my Facebook-free day unscarred.
This detox reinforced the importance of taking a
breather from social media, even if it’s your
job. I realised my brain has too
many tabs open.

The whole day not watching Netflix or TV was like
fighting an itch. It was easy to resist in the morning
because my mind was fresh, but after a stressful day I
wanted to not think. The best way that I knew how to do
that was turning on Netflix.
By dinner time I was done. As soon as I got up to cook, I
set my laptop up and pressed play. I thought at first not
watching would be easy. I mean, I’m not addicted.
I don’t spend my days glued to my TV screen
(unless I’m eating). But I guess I was wrong.
I couldn’t even last a day.
