To honor the prominence of the evening, McLane designed a new feature for the set: the proscenium, a mesmerizing arch constructed to border the stage in front of the curtain. Comprised of crystal, metal, mirror and more, McLane’s unique vision and Swarovski’s expertise came together to conceive the proscenium’s complex and beautiful shape. This futuristic, modern design strays from last year’s Art Deco influence in that it’s more of a freeform abstract design – “a little bit like a geode, or a kind of sculpture made out of crushed glass,” as described by the designer.

A larger-than-life LED screen behind the stage will play digital projections throughout the night that aim to blend virtual elements with dimensional objects around the set. In addition, Swarovski will bring back the “floating” Oscars that debuted in 2017 composed of 140,000 crystals as well as a signature backdrop curtain designed to shine with 80,000 crystals. The Dolby Theatre’s opera boxes will also be embellished with over 23,000 Swarovski crystals.

With roots grounded in entertainment for over 85 years, Swarovski is proud to celebrate a longtime commitment to the Academy Awards and the industry. Swarovski crystals have played a supporting role in some of cinema’s most memorable moments and have dressed its most iconic stars, from Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, to Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls, Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge! and Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast.

Nadja Swarovski commented: “For generations, Swarovski has demonstrated a dedication to the arts, film, costume designers, architecture and fashion. We strive for symbiotic partnerships and our 11 years with the Academy have been extraordinarily meaningful.”
