You appeared alongside Gene Wilder in Haunted Honeymoon. What was it like working with him?
Honestly from the minute I met him he was a dream. He gave me the part on the spot and reluctantly let me sing, but was dazzled that I sang "Let’s Talk Dirty To The Animals." It was the song that caused my downfall at my audition at the Donmar Warehouse a few months before. It was the song his wife Gilda Radner loved and sang.
On set he could not have been kinder. In my big scene with Jonathan Pryce - who at the time was starring with Vanessa Redgrave in "The Seagull" – I had to follow markings, better known as blocking. I’d never done it before and was terrified. Gene could see I was out my depth and whispered in my ear: "If he can do, it so can you”. I thought ‘sure thing’ and before I knew it, Gene was shouting, “It’s a wrap!” It was a great moment.
If you had any advice to the younger you, what would it be?
Don’t be so sensitive. Life is too short. It’s about laughs and love.
