We caught up with Jackie to find out more about the importance of colour in business.

Why is colour important for our business style?

The right colours make us feel positive about ourselves and make us visible, whilst the wrong ones can make us look drained and unapproachable and can alter our moods negatively. Wearing the right colours and style determines how your day will progress from the moment you get dressed in the morning, as the right clothes empowers us and sets the right tone thereby enabling personal growth.

How does colour influence our success in business?

In a business environment, we often choose to function in a sea of neutrals but through what we wear we can influence how we feel and how others feel about us. Inevitably wearing the right colours and styles means more compliments but vitally more conversations, confidence and visibility. Being memorable for the right reasons, conveying the right messages about ourselves, but also differentiating ourselves are all vital in an increasingly complex and competitive business world. Men and women need to choose to be unique and to be ourselves.

Ok so it’s important to the individual but is what we wear really of importance to the business?

“The people in your business are your greatest asset and your brand exists through the people who deliver it.  Enabling personalities to shine through whilst being congruent with your product, brand or service is key and that is why personal styling and wearing colours that allow you to look your best is a vital part of your business’s image and brand and your employees’ confidence.

What did you learn early on about style in business?

If you dress well in the right colours and style for you, then your colleagues will focus attention on what you say rather than be distracted by what you are wearing. Yet at the same time, they will be more accepting of you because you will be authentic, and feeling good about yourself helps you create a sense of authority. Secondly wearing clothes that fit are key. Items that are too big will make you look slouchy and un-kempt and tight fitting clothes could give your co-workers the wrong impression.

What are your top tips for dressing to impress in business?

OK my top three tips are:-

1. 1.Quality is important, so always buy quality shirts, blouses, jackets, cardigans etc. for work, that extra investment will send the message that you are worth it!

1. 2.Know your audience. If you have a big meeting, it’s important to wear something that suits the occasion. For example, if you’re meeting with a fashion editor, what you wear is going to be different compared with if you’re meeting with an investor.

1. 3.In certain industries wearing darker colours or more conservative outfits is expected but that doesn’t mean you need to blend into the background. Add an extra colour with your blouse, shirt, belt, scarf or shoes to make your outfit ‘pop’ just a little bit.

Actually, can I give you one more tip especially for men?

1. 4.Show your stylish personality. Instead of always opting for the standard colours, try one of your wow colours in your tie or shirt and have an amazing coat and bag. Stand out from the crowd for the right reasons.
