Scale of the Army in a Civilian Context variety of responsibilities the Army has as it accomplishes its missions: the sheer size of the budget, the considerable number of employees, the great expanse of land and high number of locations, the enormous amount of equipment, and the formidable scale of health care. As in the business world, all of the areas show change based on the need to meet ever-changing threats. Officers should ask themselves, “If I was being promoted to middle management in a large company, would I need to know how the company makes MILITARY REVIEW  July-August 2016 decisions on expanding or contracting, finances, personnel management, and adapting to markets to help my company and my career?” The answer would be yes, and it should be no different in the Army.
