Military Greek Life Issue 01 JAN/FEB 2016 | Page 5

Prior to deciding to join the effort to launch Military Greek Life (MGL), I was intrigued by the fact that military fraternities and sororities existed. After several discussions with my friend of 10 years and the Founder of MGL, Rechell Watts, I could tell that the Military Greek Lettered Organization (MGLO) was something worth looking into and promoting. Here’s a preview of what we know.

Before the year 2000, many active duty service members and veterans who are familiar with college level Greek Lettered Organizations felt that they didn’t have the opportunity to pledge. This was mainly because of frequent mobilizations or because they did not have the traditional college background to pledge as alumnae. As a result, many were left without options for joining a sorority or fraternity.

At the turn of the century, the first known United States Armed Forces sorority was founded for women of the military and would become the forerunner of several other MGLOs to form over the next 15 plus years. The good news is that things have certainly changed and now there are a total of six MGLOs to choose from. This is where Military Greek Life (MGL) comes in.

Military Greek Life is the “Premiere Network and Magazine for Military and Veteran Greek Lettered Organizations.” This lifestyle magazine provides readers with information to bring about awareness of the origins, founders, and goals of each of the MGLOs, as well as present various lifestyle topics associated with the military and veteran community.

As someone who is not a member of any of the MGLOs, I am experiencing first-hand how exciting this time it is to have these opportunities. So, here are my suggestions! Do a little research, ask a few questions, and find some references about your organization of interest. Arm yourself with information about the MGLOs introduced in our first issue and select the one that best suits your needs.

Until our next issue, here's to living the "Military Greek Life."
