Whether delivering a package or dealing with a critical situation , a key piece of the equation involves finding the right location in a timely manner . After considerable planning , the MD ’ s Transportation and Infrastructure department has begun the ambitious task of overhauling its rural addressing system . This overhaul is essential to synchronizing all MD addresses with geolocation systems used by MD service providers , emergency dispatchers and other municipal entities . While many homeowners have likely grown familiar with their current rural addresses , almost all of these addresses ( 1,784 in total ) must be changed in order to pinpoint geographic locations faster and with greater accuracy .
In coming weeks , contractors will begin the process of traveling throughout the MD to install new , geo-referenced rural address signs at farms , businesses and residences . A small percentage of MD residents will keep their old rural address but will receive new signs for consistency . Installed at no expense to landowners , these new signs will meet provincial standards , will be recognized by Google Maps , and — most importantly — will allow emergency responders and other service providers to instantly locate a given residence anywhere across the MD with pinpoint accuracy .
Once the new signage has been installed , each resident will receive a letter from the MD indicating their new rural address and providing related info regarding the new system . After the signage replacement program is complete , residents will be responsible for the cost to produce and install any future replacements . This update will result in numerous benefits to residents across the MD , from added convenience to shaving precious minutes off a critical response .
