As a rule of thumb when camping or hiking, always take out what you bring in — and then recycle or dispose Water & Utilities The Water & Utilities department provides homes and businesses with reliable, quality water and wastewater systems, and responds to any emergencies or concerns that arise. 2017’s projects planned for the MD have been completed, with just the Town of Slave Lake Raw Line Project still ongoing. The Smith Lift Station and Forcemain Replacement Projects are on target for completion this summer. The MD anticipates the arrival of the new $176,000 Smith Water Plant Membrane Upgrade. Southshore Membranes will require a service visit by Suez (Zenon) with a potential of requiring replacement. Replacements, if required, will cost at least $400,000 in addition to programming upgrades. Waste — and how we choose to handle it — affects our world’s environment. The MD also provides a variety of ways to help divert recyclable materials from the landfills. Stores like Staples and Shoppers Drug Mart accept regular and rechargeable batteries, used ink cartridges and compact fluorescent light bulbs. Each spring, the MD also helps encourage clean-up activities by providing special litter and recycling bags, coordinating waste removal, and supplying t-shirts for the occasion! Let’s all do our part by keeping Lesser Slave River litter-free, recycling what we can, and finding unique and resourceful ways to reduce the environmental impact on our region.
