New Windsor breaks ground on Butterhill Wells

By SHANTAL RILEY sriley @ tcnewspapers . com
The Town of New Windsor broke ground on three , new ground-water wells this month . When completed , the highyielding wells are expected to provide enough drinking water to serve the town into the foreseeable future .
“ Today is a big day for New Windsor ,” said town Supervisor George Green at the well field site off Forge Hill Road on Tuesday . “ I couldn ’ t be happier .”
The ground-breaking ceremony marked the start of construction for three wells reaching down about 100 feet into a ground-water aquifer . Each of the wells are expected to yield 1,000 to 1,200 gallons of water per minute .
The wells will go online by the summer of 2018 . Once operational , they will allow the town to wean itself off of pricey water from the New York City owned Catskill Aqueduct . “ This is going to save us money in the long run ,” said Green .
How much money ? Catskill Aqueduct water currently costs the town $ 1,728.99 per million gallons and $ 3,364.59 per million gallons at the overuse rate . “ We buy about a billion gallons of water per year from the New York City Water Board ,” said town Comptroller Jack Finnegan .
The search for an alternative water source began about a ten years ago , said town engineering consultant Richard McGoey , in large part due to the cost of the aqueduct water .
The aquifer was located about three years ago . “ It ’ s a pool of water in a gravel formation that is supplied from miles away ,” said McGoey . Recharged

by rainwater , the aquifer stretches from New Windsor to the Town of Newburgh , he said .
New Windsor currently consumes 3 million to 3.5 million gallons of water per day , the engineer said . The new wells will have the capacity to provide almost double that , he said .
The wells are expected to be online before the planned 10-week shutdown of the Catskill Aqueduct in the fall next year , said town Chief Water Plant Operator John Egitto .
A week-long shutdown for maintenance of the aqueduct , planned for this month , was delayed due to overgrowth of bluegreen algae at Brown ’ s Pond , Egitto said . “ The City of Newburgh and New Windsor would have used Brown ’ s Pond for the
