SPO RT COACHIN G & PHYS ICAL EDU MID CHES HIRE COL LEGE – HIGH ER EDU CATI ON PRO SPEC TUS 2014 ENTR CATI ON Y Sports Coaching & Physical Education Foundation Degree (FdA) 38 The sports, recreation, education and leisure industry has shown continued and rapid growth over recent years and as such is an ideal career destination for students. Within the private sector there has been an increase in the number of fitness centres and within the public sector a host of government initiatives emphasising the importance of physical education. The College has excellent facilities for sport and recreation including a brand new four-court sports hall in the new £7.5 million Centre for Creative Arts and Sport. Plus a gym, fitness centre, access to golf courses, football pitches and many other sporting-related facilities. The sports department has close links with several high-level sports clubs and organisations. Sports Coaching & Physical Education UCAS Code XC16 (Validated by Manchester Metropolitan University) Attendance 2 years full-time or 3-4 years part-time Entry Guidelines Students need to have 3 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English, plus a minimum of 120 UCAS points from any of the following programmes: * BTEC Extended Diploma/ Certificate/Award * A/S – A Levels * AVCE Alternatively, an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent or a Pass in an appropriate kite-marked Access to Higher Education course. Where possible an academic or vocational reference will be required to ensure suitability for this level of programme. Students who do not meet the above admissions requirements will be considered for entry if they can demonstrate that they have the relevant vocational experience, motivation and personal qualities appropriate for Foundation Degree level work. Content The majority of the programme will be delivered at the College’s Hartford site, with some elements delivered at Manchester Metropolitan University. The units below are subject to change. Level 4 Units (120 credits): * Introduction to Coaching Practice * Foundations of Sport & Performance * Developing Professional & Academic Practice * PE and the National Curriculum L  evel 5 Units (120 credits): * Coaching Pedagogy * Research Skills and the Working Environment * Delivery Methods in PE * Coaching & Performance Analysis You will have full use of the Sports Science laboratory at the Hartford site and some lab sessions will be held at Manchester Metropolitan University. Assessment This programme will be assessed by a combination of methods e.g. essays, poster displays, reflective activities, projects, presentations, laboratory reports, group assessments and case studies. There are two assessments per unit. Prospects Students will have the opportunity to apply to progress on to the second or final year of an Honours Degree in a related area at any university. Students can apply to progress to the part-time or fulltime route of the BA (Hons) Coaching Studies or the BA (Hons) Coaching and Sport Development at Manchester Metropolitan University as a top-up to Honours Degree from this Foundation Degree. Applications will be considered based on performance on Foundation Degree. Students can also progress into employment in the sports coaching industry and pursue careers such as school sport coach, multi-schools coach, PE technician and related fitness industry jobs (with additional vocational qualifications). SPORT COACHING & PHYSICAL EDUCATION SPORT COACHING & PHYSICAL EDUCATION This programme is designed for people who are, or would like to be involved with coaching, physical education or fitness. The course develops a sound understanding of the major areas of knowledge needed to work in these industries and includes skills required for effective communication, self-development and career progression. Learning takes place in the workplace and at College, with access to specialist coaching and laboratory facilities. 39
