CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY The underlying principle of the course is that all images are produced with thought as to their context and capacity to communicate to an audience. 22 Students have the opportunity to work in the specialist accommodation in the new £7.5 million Centre for Creative Arts and Sport at the Hartford Campus, which provides the highest levels of education and training, tailored to the needs of industry. This course incorporates educational visits to galleries, exhibitions and events and foreign trips, the most recent of which have included Paris, Berlin and New York. Students also have the opportunity to exhibit their work each year at the prestigious Cube Gallery in Manchester City Centre. Contemporary Photography UCAS Code W641 (Validated by University of Chester) Attendance 2 years full-time Entry Guidelines Students need to have 3 GCSEs at grade C or above, plus a minimum of 120 UCAS points from any of the following programmes: * BTEC Extended Diploma/ Certificate/Award * A/S – A Levels * AVCE Alternatively, an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent or a Pass in an appropriate kite-marked Access to Higher Education course. Where possible an academic or vocational reference will be required to ensure suitability for this level of programme. Students who do not meet the above admissions requirements will be considered for entry if they can demonstrate that they have the relevant vocational experience, motivation and personal qualities appropriate for Foundation Degree level work. Content Level 4 Units: * Introduction to Photography * Exploring Creative Methods * Presentation/Portfolio * Industry and Practice * Digital Foundation * Historical/Contemporary Studies Level 5 Units: * Context and Design (optional) * Communication (optional) * Digital Imaging * Critical Reflection and Research * Specialist Practice * Photography as a Profession Assessment This programme will be assessed by a combination of methods, e.g. portfolio including visual artwork, research projects, reports and presentations. Prospects Students will have the opportunity to apply to progress on to the second or final year of an Honours Degree in a related area at any university. Students will have the opportunity to progress on to the third and final year of an Honours Degree programme at the University of Chester. Students can also progress into employment in the photographic industry and pursue careers such as photographic assistants, photographic laboratory work, advertising, fashion, medical, press, sport and wedding photographers. CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY Students experience an experimental and creative environment in which to produce their work. A wide spectrum of approaches is encouraged – through various forms of subject matter including documentary, conceptual, portraiture and studio-based work. Students are encouraged to develop their own personal style and are helped by a team dedicated to the highest standards of practice. 23
