MONDAY, JUNE 13, 2016 Miami Music AN INDEPENDENT SUPPLEMENT BY MIA MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS GROUP TO THE SUN SENTINEL BB17 Miami DJs Spin AfroBeats By Janey Tate “They play the music that keeps us hooked,” said Obiesie. “This is the first time an event of such has happened.” Five talented DJs competed in the AfroBeat Miami DJ of the Year competition on May 27th. DJ LL Cool Haze took home the coveted title “AfroBeat Miami DJ of the Year,” $1000, a feature in Creative Magazine and a hotel stay on South Beach. DJ LL Cool Haze, whose birth name is Justin Elliot, said the thing he liked most about the competition was the crowd’s energy. “It was a great feeling seeing the huge check coming towards me with my name on it. The thing I liked about the competition is that it was based off of the crowd. So winning means that I was able to win over the crowd which is one thing that I work very hard to do when I play,” said Elliot. The South Florida based DJ, who’s originally from Philadelphia and of Jamaican decent, entered the competition to challenge himself. Since winning Elliot has released his first AfroBeat mix titled “King of the AfroBeat.” He hopes to travel to more internationally especially to London. “I have a nice size [British] following through my Soundcloud. AfroBeat is huge over there,” said Elliot. “I'm also excited for the Carnivals that are coming up. Afrobeat has a huge influence on Soca music and I plan on blending the sounds together with a new confidence.” Oluchi Obiesie of African Elite Entertainment and DJ LL Cool Haze “AfroBeat Miami DJ of the Year” More than 300 people came to celebrate African music and the DJs who consistently deliver the newest and hottest international tunes at R House in #AfroBeat Miami - Silent Battle of the DJs Beauty By T.
