In the early 1990s,
law enforcement was not trained
to respond to people, such as Felix,
who were exhibiting signs of a psychiatric
crisis. Now, MHMRA has joined forces with
the Houston Police Department and
the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to create
Crisis Intervention Response Teams. MHMRA
licensed clinicians accompany officers to respond
to calls involving people who may have mental illness.
The result is safer interactions that have a better
chance of appropriately redirecting people into
mental health care, not jail.
