MG has launched the 2017 MG 3 hatch and 2017 MG 6 Plus fastback in Australia , marking the Chinese-owned British brand ’ s latest swing at the Australian market .
The storied brand ’ s most recent appearance in the hugely competitive Australian market was through a local distributor , but it failed to make any real headway and cars were left unsold for months .
This time , MG owner SAIC – China ’ s largest carmaker and a manufacturing partner to General Motors and Volkswagen – has taken direct control of the brand ’ s Australian sales .
On sale from late November , the MG 3 range – first scheduled to launch here back in 2013 – kicks off at $ 13,990 before on-road costs , while the larger MG 6 Plus starts at $ 21,990 before on-roads .
The company aims to offer a “ fun and value-packed range ”, with both models being offered in three-tier ranges ; Core , Soul and Essence .
As the latest entrant into the Australian light car segment , the MG 3 will take on the likes of the Mazda 2 and Toyota Yaris .
Measuring 4018mm long , 1728mm wide and 1517mm high , the MG 3 is 42mm shorter , 33mm wider and 22mm taller than a Mazda 2 , while the MG ’ s 256L boot just edges the its Japanese rival ( 250L ).
Standard in the base MG 3 Core are 14-inch steel wheels , LED daytime-running lights , a CD player with MP3 compatibility , USB and auxiliary inputs , electric windows along with manual air-conditioning .
Moving up to the mid-spec MG 3 Soul ($ 14,990 ) adds remote central locking , bluetooth phone and audio streaming , leather multifunction steering wheel , chrome exhaust tip , sixway manually-adjustable driver ’ s seat , sunglasses holder , reverse parking sensors , “ follow me home ” headlights and a six-speaker audio
