The 2018 Automnal Run
I shared some of my trials and tribula-
tions after my old ‘C’ over-heated again
when lining up at The Bend waiting to be
directed to our MG display area. I modi-
fied the cooling fan back in 2003 and the
second hand fan clutch decided to say
good night. I replaced it with a new one
and now it’s running too cold. My next
job is to replace the thermostat with a
hotter one. These 50 year old cars al-
ways seem to need maintenance of
some sort. Although, I must say 15
years service from a second hand fan
clutch is probably not too bad especially
when it first went into service in 1987!
Richard was hovering about and taking
notes while I was doing the work so I’m
sure you can expect the full story in a
future magazine article.
he usual MGCers rolled up for this
year’s Automnal run. There was
Jim McCrickard in his red roadster,
nicely cleaned after the wet run to The
Bend a couple of weeks prior, Robin
Gibb brought along his brother in the
white roadster, Peter Carthy arrived in
his green GT and Ron Telford and I
were in our red GTs also cleaned and
shining.
Jim also brought along his
Japanese exchange student Hidetoshi
Takemoto who enjoyed looking at the
old cars. His English was a lot better
than my Japanese, “sayonara”.
Once again we headed east along
Greenhill Road and turned right when
we reached the top of the range at 700m
or 2,300ft for the old imperialists in the
Club. We skirted Mt Lofty and dropped
down into Crafers. Turning off to Picca-
dilly, we veered right at the round-about
and headed toward Stirling, along Old
Mt Barker Road to Aldgate, then a right
and a left and into Bridgewater. We
travelled over the SE Freeway along
Carey Gully Road and eventually found
our way onto Greenhill Road again but
heading west this time to the Uraidla
Hotel. We found ourselves a park out
front and headed inside.
Peter shared his plans for his next trip
away. When we asked him where he
was going he answered “north where it’s
warmer”. Anywhere specific? “We’ll
probably turn right a day or two past
Coober Pedy”. How long are you going
for?
“Probably until we get back”.
That’s what I like a man with firm plans.
When we were leaving Jim took us over
to his ‘C’ in the car park and showed us
his new steering wheel and boss that he
bought from Rodney at MG Sales & Ser-
vice. We all oohed and aahed which
tickled a happy response in Jim. He told
as that “there are 3 different columns on
the "C", such as a different spline di-
ameter, so the correct one is required.”
Yes Jim, it is very a nice wheel.
I promised the MGC drivers a tour of the
men’s toilets. The pub was renovated
several years back and the men’s toilets
have been very creatively refurbished. I
thought ‘hands-on’ people like Jim, Pe-
ter and Ron might steal some of the
creative ideas for their next home reno.
It’s a bit Steam Punk! I fact I’ve even
found women in there inspecting the
men’s urinal.
Robin parked next to a boring old white
Hyundai when we arrived and while we
were inside a fairy godmother had come
along and turned it into a Ferrari Mondial
in a lovely scarlet colour, what else?
