MG Car Club of South Australia MGA / MAGNETTE REGISTER From.. Sandra Cardnelklk F MGA/MAGNETTE REGISTER MEETING HELD AT THE CLUBROOMS 20 JULY 2017 irstly, I must apologise for not send- ing a reminder to everyone. I had my email suspended by Telstra four days into our holiday. In spite of an online chat (or two) nothing could be done until we were home, and even that took 8 days and a long time on the phone (and on hold). So, along with the weather, that may have been the reason for the slightly lower attendance. In fact, apologies nearly outnumbered attendance. Pre- sent were Karen and Murray Stephen- son, Nick Micklem and Geoff Goode. Apologies from Dee and Ian Denny and Dennise Micklem. We had a chat, some supper and Alan put his photos from the Goodwood Fes- tival of Speed on the big screen. Don’t worry if you missed this exciting presen- tation – another opportunity presents at the Monthly General Meeting – or, he can be convinced to present a private screening, any time, any place. new house. His comment was that he had moved two hundred yards and that was it. Apparently he did not leave the property – life was obviously simpler then. The cottage was interesting, lots of lovely old furniture and there was an organ with sheet music for hymms and other songs. Music was obviously a big part of life in the 1850’s. There was what looked like a crystal radio set with the speaker attached to an old gramo- phone “ear”. I think the Wicks family were very inventive. On the way to the shed to look at the car collection, we passed an annexe to the cottage which contained an old tractor, Spraying equipment for the nursery trees and I think the very first IKEA shelving system – about thirty or so wooden crates stacked on each other and filled with old car lights, car parts and a lot of other items collected over the years. Under the bench was an en- gine and the head seemed to be part of the block – interesting. We eventually made our way to the shed and more surprises inside. Mr Wicks collected unusual vehicles – and Next meeting will again be at the Club- they were. He started off with one vin- tage car because a mate had one. One rooms on September 21. See you there of his vehicles was on its way to the ALL MGA RUN TO BALHANNAH dump and the owner gladly handed it 13 TH AUGUST 2017 over to him. He did not stop there. This run was not limited to MGA’s so we 1920’s Yellow cabs, Singers, a Besst, had three MGB’s and MGF and a VW DKW, a Gordon, Model T delivery truck, join the 13 MGA’s who travelled to visit a 1924 Turcat Mery (from France), four the car collection of David and Di Wicks’ motor bikes (1920’s) and of course father at Balhannah. I think I tage from the 1850’s has been turned missed a couple, but David and Di are into a museum with the excess furniture happy to welcome visitors to their prop- from the property. Another house was erty. Perhaps another time. Di usually built as the family increased and Mr has a gold coin donation collection for Wicks moved from the cottage to the visitors but forgot this time. I am happy 22
