Generation Y
Time magazine labelled Millennials as people born between years 1980 and 2000.
American Pew Research Centre made the timeline slightly more narrow, 1981 – 1996.
Another definition that I, personally, relate to the most is Emma Roberts’ when in the role of Madison
Montgomery in the third season of American Horror Story:
“I am a millennial. Generation Y; born between the birth of AIDS and 9/11, give or take. They call us
the global generation. We are known for our entitlement and narcissism. Some say it’s because we’re
the first generation where every kid gets a trophy just for showing up. Others think it’s because
social media allows us to post when we fart or have a sandwich for all the world to see. But it seems
our one defining trait is a numbness to the world. An indifference to suffering.”
We are the last generation that remembers a childhood without modern technologies, without mobile
phones, social media, although now we can hardly imagine living without them. We are also known as
the iGen because of that.
We are the last generation that remembers the dialup tone.
It is sometimes said that it’s complicated for our generation to live in today’s world than it was in the
past. There’s more expected from us, we are pressured by social standards and stereotypes, which we’re
trying hard to break, we are congested by all the information around us and we are still expected to
grow into proper adults.

We are a generation that is influenced by the horrible acts of terrorists all round the world. We were
placed into a society where we are expected to solve global warming that are ancestors caused.
Against all odds we are however more open-minded than our parents and probably even more tough
than the upcoming generation – Generation Z.
