SANTA HATES YOU

SPREADING CHRISTMAS CHEER WITH PETER AND JINXY OF

Formed in 2007 Santa Hates You has been blazing trails with their brand of "Dark Electro Industrial" music. Peter Spilles originally from Project Pitchfork formed the band with the italian vocalist/lyricst Jinxy and together they have created a band largely unchalleged in their genre. Recently we had the oppurtunity to speak with the duo, and our interview is below...enjoy!

For me in particular I was interested in listening to you band due to the catchy name, as well as work with Project Pitchfork can you explain how the name Santa Hates You came about?

PS: During one of our legendary brainstorming sessions. We were looking for something peculiar, a band name that will stick in your mind forever. You might love it or hate it, but you sure as hell won’t forget it.

JINXY: On top of that, with its blend of child-like innocence and unexpected noxiousness, the name "SANTA HATES YOU“ symbolically represents our critical attitude against the ethic-less world in which we live. Turning a concept which is commonly perceived as 100% positive into something sinister, leads to a drastic and immediate change of perspective which perfectly fits our artistic universe.

How did you all come together for this project?

PS: It was just about time. When Jinxy and I met, we discovered that we share the same tastes in terms of music, arts and good wine. We soon became friends and plotted about starting a band together. That's exactly how it happened.

Where does Santa Hates You get its inspiration for its music?

PS: My ideas for the music come from everything I see, hear and feel. I am chronically inspired“ and a cure has not been found yet! :o)

It's a little bit like with food: although I eat everyday, that doesn’t stop me from getting hungry over and over again.

How does your music take shape, do you develop the music around the lyrics or is it the other way around?

PS: Most of the times music and lyrics are born

independently from each other. When I create

music I like to feel totally free to explore any

direction I want to. I sink into the music and I

drift in other spheres until I am totally satisfied

with the instrumental result. I only finish songs

which are in my opinion worth to live already as

an instrumental. Then it’s time for the lyrics.

JINXY: I decide instinctively. It has to feel right.

An instrumental track always has a certain

feeling to it, a certain flavor and character. The

instrumental will „tell you“ what kind of lyrics it

needs. I might write words especially for an

instrumental or use lyrics that I had previously

written that turn out to be the perfect match

for the music in question.

I have discussed Santa Hates You with many fans over here in the states, and they all agree one of the things they enjoy the most are the videos that you make to accompany your music, how do your videos come to be? Are there folks you pull in to develop it, or do you both have an idea of what you want to do?
