t’s not every day that a Hollywood
celebrity walks in the doors of a
Mesquite school. But that’s just what
famous actor and singer Jamie Foxx
did on Saturday, May 5.

The stage was set for Foxx in the Florence Black
Elementary library, where he arrived in a navy
blue suit to tout the countless benefits of getting
the literacy process started early, and to share some
personal stories with Mesquite ISD.
The grandson of a preschool teacher and Terrell,
Texas, native, Foxx has vivid memories of structured
mornings where he would get up early and read
with his grandmother, who taught him how to read.
“There was no missing days [of school],” he said
