Mesquite ISD Read Play Talk Magazine Fall 2017 | Page 26
M
esquite ISD offered something
new this year for parents of
preschool and elementary students—a
beautiful ReadPlayTalk calendar!
The 13-month wall calendar features our weekly
school menus as well as original photographs of
MISD’s own families. Our diverse and talented
educators opened up their homes to us to
show how they implement RPT every day.
The calendar was distributed to elementary
campuses at the start of the 2017-18 school
year for MISD families to take home and use.
The calendar highlights 365 specific RPT
ideas—one for each day—for fostering a rich
learning environment in your home through
conversation, storytelling, frequent play and
of course, reading good books.

MISD Communications developed the calendar to
support RPT efforts and to share our philosophy
that the most important asset we have in our
community is our children.
In order for our kids to become the successful
adults we desire them to be, they must be good
readers—and the earlier, the better. Of course, we
encourage literacy in our schools, but Mesquite
ISD Superintendent Dr. David Vroonland knows
that’s not enough. His vision is to provide parents
the resources to make major strides in improving
reading ability at home so that students will be
equipped before they ever start kindergarten.
We hope the RPT wall calendar will play a part in
creating a ReadPlayTalk culture in the homes of
MISD families. Not only will the suggestions help
develop our children into strong readers, but it will
help to create cherished memories.
