As we have mentioned in Chapter 5 , benign prostatic hyperplasia ( BPH ) is another name for an enlarged prostate due to the proliferation of tissue in the prostate . BPH leads to an obstruction of the bladder and lower urinary tract symptoms . A pathologist bases a definitive diagnosis of BPH on histology or review of a specimen of the prostate . A histological confirmation of BPH is required for diagnosis because men can experience lower urinary tract symptoms independently of BPH .
