Regardless of whether the math was correct, I learned very quickly that you really do get what you pay for and the VSB250 is worth every penny.

Van Staal claims that their most famous feature is the sealed, waterproof drag system. They claim their reels are the most durable and reliable fishing reels on the market. To make it so indestructible, they engineered water-tight seals throughout the spool, body and handle. This technology was then paired with an unbelievably smooth drag system. The end product is a beast of a spinning reel.

For tarpon fishing, I paired it with a custom built rod that sports an extra-long rod handle/butt.

As most tarpon anglers know, much of a fight is often to the side or down, in an effort to stop and roll the tarpon over. With a longer butt, you can place it comfortably under your arm pit and gain extra leverage fighting a tarpon.

The first time I used the Van Staal with my custom rod was in Boca Grande, Florida seven years ago. The first tarpon hooked on this rig weighed around 140 lbs. I landed it in a little over fifteen minutes. I was absolutely delighted with the drag on the VSB250. The smoothness of the drag was commented on by both my fellow angler and the guide.

After having caught lots of tarpon on the reel, I got a chance to try it out on a large yellowfin tuna with a popper. The same VSB250 subdued a 90 lb. tuna in less than seven minutes. If all the tarpon hadn’t convincement me, the tuna certainly sealed the deal.

I am now working on my seventh year with the reel. It has never been to the reel repair shop. I rinse it with fresh water after each trip and put her away for the next one. I keep it spooled with 80 lb. braid. Van Staal claims the reel holds 600 yards of 50 lb. braid. With 80 lb. braid, I have more than enough on the spool.

As with most spinning reels, drag adjustments are on the top of the spool. I have found the drag to be smooth and reliable. When a fish makes long runs, the familiar spool jerk is completely absent in the Van Stall.

If you want a workhorse of a spinning reel that is not only reliable but a stellar performer, then Van Staal should be your reel of choice. I bought it for a lifetime of use. I may be far short of that, but I’ve got it off to a good start.
