Challenges facing business in ‘the north’
With the phrase
Northern
Powerhouse
making it into
the first two
minutes of the
Chancellor’s
Budget speech,
you’d be forgiven
for thinking that there would be some
significant announcements to come.
However, whilst there was the
promise of further devolution and
transport links and a progress
update on Health North, there were
relatively few new announcements
and it remains to be seen how far the
concept will grow beyond the rhetoric.
The success of the Northern
Powerhouse concept will also
rest in part on the outcome of
the ongoing debate as to how
‘The North’ will overcome
geographical and cultural
barriers to truly join together.
However the details play out, a
spotlight on the North and the
innovation carried out here should
be positive for our businesses,
for example, in recruiting
and retaining employees and
increasing international profile
and exports.
Businesses operating in the
North should also be aware of
financial support they can access
now. Currently available reliefs
include potential rates relief and
enhanced capital allowances for
businesses within Enterprise
Zones, as well as nationally
available measures such as the
generous R&D tax relief and
Patent Box measures.
At BHP, we have extensive
experience of working with
innovative companies to maximise
these reliefs and through our
partnership with Medilink we are
happy to offer an initial advice
session to member organisations
on a no obligation basis, along
with a 10% discount on the first
year’s costs. www.bhp.co.uk
