In 2011 Kate was crowned Extraordinary Woman of the Year after making a remarkable recovery from locked-in syndrome. After suffering a stroke Kate, who had been a prolific fell runner, found herself cognitively sound but she no longer had the ability to move any part of her body, an experience which she now draws upon when public speaking. Recent such engagements have seen Kate present at the 47th Annual Lecture for Designability at the University of Bath, where she discussed themes including selfmanagement, patient engagement and dignity. In addition Kate was also selected as a TEDx speaker at their first event held at Sheffield Hallam University. www.kateallatt.com @KateAllatt See Kate’s TEDx talk at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=SptlyNYjtIU SPIROMETRY GOES VERTICAL WITH SPIROCONNECT Sheffield-based Numed Healthcare has launched a new turbine spirometer SpiroConnect. SLEEPCOGNI - THE WORLD’S FIRST CBT-BASED SLEEP DEVICE Sleep is an often overlooked cornerstone of health and wellness, and the technology being worked on by new Medilink member SleepCogni aims to combat this. SleepCogni is the world’s first Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based sleep device that winds the user down to a sleep ready state using and engaging a bedside system of audio, visual and tactile stimuli that helps the user to switch off. This is the first product to combine these stimuli and physiological measures such as heart rate and body activity as a treatment for insomnia. Clinical studies supported by Sheffield Hallam University confirmed that SleepCogni is effective in treating patients with insomnia showing a 50% improvement in sleep quality and 40% improvement in sleep quantity. www.sleepcogni.com L @SleepCogni A spirometer measures the volume of air inspired and expired by the lungs. The new, innovative SpiroConnect device features enhancements that make it more accurate and easier to use than any other turbine spirometer. By orientating the SpiroConnect turbine vertically, rather than horizontally, it has less rotational resistance and is therefore more sensitive to low flow rates. This, in addition to the use of an advanced antistatic plastic, significantly enhances measurement accuracy, particularly when testing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Asthma patients. SpiroConnect is fully integrated with the EMIS, TPP SystmOne and InPS Vision GP clinical systems through Numed’s Intelligent Integration Interface (I3) software. Up to 40 user selectable spirometry read codes and a PDF spirometry test report are filed to the clinical system in seconds at the end of the test. This makes it perfect for the busy GP surgery. SpiroConnect will save considerable amounts of nursing and administration time and more importantly, ensure the highest levels of patient safety by filing spirometry results to the correct patient’s medical record, every time.
