them. No one sat more than four rows from the
stage, so each presenter could see the face of
every single attendee. When the meeting opened,
the attendees found themselves in an unusual and
distinctive environment.
Having created something “Different,” Media Matrix
then went to work on emphasizing the “Delivered”
part of their theme. As Media Matrix President
Michael Olenski said, “We wanted the actual
delivery of physical objects to be part of the
presentations throughout. Not only to emphasize
the theme, but to serve as a segue between
presentations and meeting elements. It really added
a lot to the continuity of the event.”
The deliveries began on the first full meeting day,
when an actor playing a delivery person appeared
at various points during the presentations. Each
delivery was tied into the meeting’s message during
the presentation to deliver items such as a microphone, food, coffee and props. One actor, dressed
in corresponding costumes to the items delivered,
played many parts to include a FedEx delivery
person, pizza delivery guy, postal worker, AV
tech and more—engaging the presenters in an
entertaining way.
Next came a team building exercise—fairly standard
for business meetings, but once again, Media
Matrix had a different idea. They recommended a
“song building” exercise that cast the attendees as
songwriters and performers, an exercise kicked off
with an up-tempo performance by a musical band
that then invited the attendees to divide into three
groups and put theme-based, Patheon-based lyrics
to a song each team would compose on their own.
To make things more interesting, teams got to
choose a band name for themselves and each
member wore a colored bandana to establish a
unique look for each team. As a result, three
groups of enthusiastic Patheon attendees participated in a “sing-off” based on the song they’d
created. Each team performed their song on stage
with a group of highly talented musicians and the
audience then chose the best song composition
and performance of the three, based on (what
else?) applause loudness. Result: Extension of
teamwork and entertainment throughout the rest of
the event. “Attendees at these events expect team
building exercises, but they don’t expect things like
musical performances with themselves as the
stars,” Olenski said.
The Media Matrix contributions went beyond their
own activities at the actual meeting venue itself.
They provided audio-visual support for off-site
attendee awards, held at the Atlanta History
Museum, and collaborated with a sales training
partner for a series of workshops.
As the final meeting day arrived, the question was
whether Media Matrix and Patheon could combine
to end the event on an even more memorable note. Naturally, the answer was yes.
Media Matrix and Patheon planners cooked up a live, interactive version of
“Celebrity Apprentice,” featuring Patheon performers and, of course, a Donald
Trump look-alike, hair and all—an entertaining format to interview regional sales
leaders. “Patheon Celebrity Apprentice” was a big hit and further demonstrated
the flexibility of Media Matrix in creating a fun, interactive, high-impact meeting
element and executed it flawlessly.
Media Matrix had definitely presented Patheon with “The Difference, Delivered.”
When the meeting was over, Patheon’s Sales Leadership agreed the meeting truly
delivered on their expectations—with Patheon’s Business Development Executives
commenting that it was the best meeting they ever attended.
