The Farnese Atlas

<http://ancientrome.ru/art/artworken/img.htm?id=4657>

The Farnese Atlas is a Roman marble copy of an earlier Greek statue. It depicts Atlas carries a globe on his shoulders, on which the constellations are depicted as they were imagined in the Greco-Roman world. These constellations are of similar form to their counterparts in Harley 647. This sculpture will help demonstrate the roots of this astronomical/astrological iconography in the Classical period, and show that this iconography crosses the boundaries of media.
