ME/NA/SA FUTURISMS MENASA FUTURISMS :: 2 | Page 5

Inspired by Cyberpunk, Afropunk, and punk in general as a movement, Tÿma started her project: Habibipunk. It is an art project tackling the trends of the future and the universal issues that come with it from conformity, consumerism, to capitalism to name a few and how they relate to mental health in the Middle East. The first series in this project, Gulf Futurism, is about the issue of electronic waste around the Arabian Gulf. Tÿma Hezam is a Syrian/Saudi/American artist and filmmaker based in Orange County, California. She studies cognitive science at UCI and likes to crossbreed her science background with her art and spoken-word poetry. She is a member of Crossway Foundation, a UK-based charity delivering arts and education initiatives for young people in the Middle East where she travels around to contribute and collaborate with artists on different projects. When she is not doing that, she’s probably making a playlist on Soundcloud or attending an electro set.
