Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

by Julie Averbuch, Reading Coordinator, [email protected]

The students of MDS celebrated the 110th birthday of the famous author, Theodore Geisel. Children and adults fondly know him by his pen name, Dr. Seuss. For more than 20 years after his passing, we are still entertained by his unforgettable characters and quotable rhymes.

Dr. Seuss Day was celebrated with a visit from the Cat in the Hat (our own Jamie Bunin). Excitement continued to fill the air as teachers and administrators, donning Dr. Seuss hats, read a Dr. Seuss favorite to a class. Dr. Seuss stated that he never began the writing of a story without a moral in mind. Following the reading of the book, each grade had the opportunity to discuss the life lesson of the book.

As teachers returned to their respected class, a writing lesson ensued. Students were asked to write about the lesson he/she learned from the story. The children’s writings revealed that there were countless

bits of truth and life lessons to be learned from his books.
