Mayer Area Lions Club The Mayer Area Lions Club was chartered in December 2017, the year of the Lions Clubs International Centennial Celebration. Offi cers are: president, Patty Lanting; 1st vice president, Joe Dvorak; 2nd vice president, Mike Wegner; secretary, Brenda Van Dyne; and treasurer, Dorine Vanderlinde. The club is currently working on fundraising for the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation in recognition of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. NEW GERMANY AREA Carver County 4-H Shooting Sports and Wildlife Program 4-H Shooting Sports and Wildlife (SS&WL) program is designed for youth to build skills in the safe use of fi rearms and archery, and learn the importance of protecting Minnesota’s natural resources. Participants in the program must complete 15 hours of instruction in a specifi c discipline to qualify for the state competition their fi rst year of participation and then eight hours every year after that. The project area covers the following disciplines: wildlife, archery, air rifl e, air pistol, BB, tomahawk, black powder, and trap. Age requirements are listed on the website for each discipline. This 4-H project group meets in New Germany each year from January through March, which allows the group to practice indoors during the winter months helping them complete necessary hours for both county and state shoot competitions. During April through August, the group meets at the Carver County Sportsman Club. The youth are taught by certifi ed instructors who are 4-H volunteers in the Carver County 4-H program. Youth learn by doing. This learning model teaches them life skills, such as problem-solving, decision-making, coping, communicating, and teamwork. Area 4-H clubs include: Mayer Riverside 4- H Club, Watertown Willing Workers 4-H Club, New Horizons 4-H Club,Youngwood 4-H Club, Pleasant Valley 4-H Club, and Waconia Whiz Kids 4-H Club. New Germany American Legion The New Germany American Legion was formed in 1946. It provides color guard assembly for funerals and parades, commemorates Memorial Day, and hosts turkey bingo at Thanksgiving. Roger Sauerbrey is the post commander. The Legion Club regularly meets at 6:30 p.m. in the New Germany City Hall, the fi rst Monday of the month, beginning in September, through May. The club also hosts a banquet in June for its members. The post has available for purchase 3-foot-by-5- foot and 4-foot-by-6-foot American fl ags, and also has wheelchairs, crutches, and walkers to loan. New Germany Commercial Club ������������� ������������������� �������������������� 24 The New Germany Commercial Club was fi rst organized by local businessmen in 1934, and later opened up to community members in the ‘70s. It is a volunteer organization created to advance community interest and civic participation in providing area residents and visitors with recreational facilities and family-oriented activities.
