As soon as we saw the breathtaking mangrove swamp, we knew that build- ing a conventional multi-story ocean-view hotel was out of the question. We needed to be more creative and come up with something out of the ordinary. Mayakoba emerged as a destination conceived around three pillars: luxury, golf and water. And so the history of Mayakoba began, in the mid-1990s, when the Riviera Maya was nothing but a few pipe-dreams with potential. It was a titanic undertaking that demanded preserving the environment on the one hand and creating a unique, unforgettable resort on the other. For- tunately, the solution surpassed expectations: the main buildings of each hotel and their respective lobbies were to be constructed behind the strip of protected mangrove swamp, while lower ones would be built closer to the shore, for the beach clubs. A golf course would stretch from the resort to the coast, creating a passage for the sea breeze, and the underground rivers flowing beneath the region’s abundant limestone would be used to feed a network of canals –perhaps the key feature of the project– connecting the various hotels on the property. It was a solution that struck the perfect bal- ance between protecting and showcasing the resort’s natural surroundings and creating opulent spaces for the enjoyment of guests.
