Letter from the Editor I recently saw a report that kids now spend more time on their electronic devices and phones than they do sleeping. It’s an alarming trend and causes a variety of issues that include shorter attention spans, obesity and poor communi- cation skills, just to name a few. If that’s not a wakeup call to unplug and get away from your devices I don’t know what is! I say this because we as parents and grandparents must create change. We need to spend more time actually doing something in our “real” lives than watching it go by on social media or playing video games. Spring is the perfect time to get outside and spend time with our families away from our computers and phones. Our city is filled with festivals, sport- ing events and other fun things to do in the coming months; all you have to do is check out our May/June calendar (pg 60) to see the happenings. If allergies and the winds we’ve been experiencing are keep- ing you from outdoor activity, why not spruce up the inside of your home? In our Pastimes article, (pg 48) we show you how easy it is to transform a blank wall into a work of art with chalkboard paint. It’s a cool new trend the entire family can embrace, adding loads of personality to rooms with color, inspirational sayings and even practical applications. Plus, how much fun is it to draw on the wall without getting into trouble? We hear about so many unique and interesting experiences and people in town, so as a longtime Las Vegan I shouldn’t be surprised at what comes across my desk. I thought it was crazy to have a hockey team in the heat of our city (and was I ever wrong…Go Knights), but a vineyard and olive oil orchard in the desert? What a head scratcher! The story of Roger Gehring and his School Lane Vineyard might sound crazy, but despite naysayers, it's become a reality. Our Lifestyles article (pg 42) details how he did it, it’s a fun read about making dreams come true at any age. I hope you enjoy this issue and take every opportunity to appreciate our flawless spring weather, when you aren’t being blown around that is! The heat will be here before you know it, so get out there and do something. Thanks for supporting the magazine, and I look forward to seeing you in the neighborhood.
