Stars and Skye
Stargazing isn ’ t always easy in a town like ours , where the bright lights of the Strip cast an all-encompassing glow on the heavens above , but with the right equipment the desert sky is a dazzling spectacle to behold . On May 19th , join the Las Vegas Astronomical Society ( LVAS ) for a close-up peek at the stars at Skye Canyon Park ( 10111 W . Skye Canyon Park ). With a 180-degree unobstructed view of the night sky , the location is perfect for observing the cosmos , as is the mid-May date when mighty Jupiter with its four Galilean moons and Venus will be ripe for viewing . You won ’ t have to search the universe with your naked eye ; LVAS volunteers will be on hand with 10 telescopes and two scientific video cameras specializing in astrophotography . These knowledgeable stargazers will operate the equipment and point out cool celestial sightings like galaxies , asteroids , iridium flares and shooting stars .

Music on the Move
Since it was established in 1998 , The Las Vegas Philharmonic has become a vital part of the community and a point of pride , not just on the music scene , but in arts and education as a whole . Their mission has always been to perform music that enriches and educates while building a vibrant , culturally rich community . Their enrichment initiatives have touched the lives of youth all over the valley , presenting unparalleled opportunities for growth and development through musical arts .
Soon they ’ ll be rolling out another program designed to deliver music and its benefits to more of Las Vegas . Aptly named The Music Van , the initiative will bring customizable programs out into the community . The diverse array of programming includes classroom music support using specially designed musical instruments for young children ; instrument demos , chamber music and composition programs for middle schoolers and older students ; performances and music therapy experiences for seniors ; and engaging community events that give people the chance to play different instruments and jam with professional musicians . The van ’ s maiden voyage is set to begin in late 2018 , travelling throughout Las Vegas , North Las Vegas and Henderson . The hope is that over a three-year period they ’ ll be able to branch out even further . To make a donation to the cause or learn more , visit www . lvphil . org .
