LABOR OF LOVE
Chad Heffernan, Palmetto Bay, FL has spent
the last six years (with more to go) working
on his custom golf car. He shares his story:
The build started
out as a 1994 Melex
with a Mercedes
SL limo body. I had
to weld together
a new frame since
the original was so
rusted. I restored
and painted the
body, added an
EMP custom wound
motor, an Alltrax
AXE500 controller,
a 58.8v Nissan Leaf
lithium battery
with WiFi BMS and
17amp Charger
(dead to full in 3 hours). Other upgrades
include; heavy duty forward/reverse switch,
custom seats, vinyl covered removable roof,
and twilights from a 1960 Pontiac retrofitted
with LEDs. A killer stereo with a PPI amp,
Polk speakers, and a JBL subwoofer. A faux
teak floor, a trunk made out of an old shop
sink (insulated to
act as a cooler),
and an Ausco disc
brake setup. In
the front, I re-
placed the front
suspension with
that of a 2008
Tomberlin, com-
plete with hydrau-
lic disc brakes,
dual a-arms, and
coil over shocks.
Between the
build, I started a
club for golf carts
in Palmetto Bay, FL where they are legal
to drive on public roads. We have over 180
members now!
