also want to appoint someone to be a trustee to handle the money for them until they are old enough or responsible enough to do this on their own. This may or may not be the same person you designated as the guardian for their care. GOT KIDS? Do you have children? If so, this is one of the most compelling reasons to get your affairs in order. If the kids have another living parent or guardian, in most cases that person would legally assume the responsibility for their care. But what if they don’t? Or can’t? Or what if both of you passed away? If you have minor children, you need to think through these possibilities and decide who would take over. If you have assets you want to pass on to your kids, you’ll 84 | Eydis Magazine In some situations, it makes sense to have a trustee even for grown children. This would typically occur if you have reason to believe that your grown child or other beneficiary might not be able to handle his or her own affairs responsibly. The trustee can be an individual or a corporate trustee (often a bank). Also, spend some time thinking about how you want to make a difference in the world after you’re gone. Naming a charitable organization in your will, trust, or as a beneficiary of your life insurance or retirement account can not only make a big impact for a cause important to you, but also possibly save your heirs taxes. It’s a lot to think through. Some people choose to create their own estate plan using templates available online. If you have a more complicated situation, or are not confident in your ability to execute the proper documents correctly, we highly recommend that you hire a good estate planning attorney to guide you through this process. Attorneys can answer your questions, help minimize tax obligations for your heirs, and make sure your plan is legally sound.
