General Advantages No matter which side of the lake you come from, this will be a great month to make a few short rides, scout out a few hot spots, and find some nice fish in Lake Borgne. The rig off of Pointe Aux Marchettes is a favorite, the rig off of Alligator Point has put a lot of fish in my boat, the shell reef just south of Bayou St. Malo will likely have some great topwater action on calm mornings, and the rocks all around Proctor’s Point will offer a variety of great fishing. Half Moon Island is almost always deserted and usually holds schooling trout around one of its points. Areas Worth a Look 1. Rigolets The train bridge, the flats off the Intracoastal, the marshes of Rabbit island, the Pearl River, Unknown Pass 2. Alligator Point 1 Chef Pass, Star Bayou, Bayou Magill, the rigs off Alligator Pt. 3. Bienvenue/Violet Bienvenue marshes, Martello Castle, jetties between Lake Borgne and MRGO, rocks around Violet locks 7 2 4. Proctor’s Point All canal mouths, rocks along the Point, flats and broken marsh at tip of Point, marshes inside Point 5. Beauregard/Shell Beach 6 Rocks around fort, oyster reef in front of fort, old Shell Beach pilings, Dolut’s Canal, Bayou St. Malo, reef near Indian mound and Bayou St. Malo, rocks along shoreline 6. Lake rigs 3 Numerous rigs in the lake produce fish. The larger seem to have better shell bottoms than the smaller, but any rig on any given day can be holding bait which, in turn, will hold fish. 4 7. Top of the Marsh 5 From Half Moon Island to Nine Mile Pass and up to Isle d’Pitre (one of many spellings I have found), there are numerous oyster reefs, choke points, and pockets for fish. Flatboat Key or Creole Gap Key is easy to find and usually holds nice fish. You’ll often find birds working in these areas. Schools of redfish can often be found chasing bait in coves with shell shorelines.
