How Accurate is Your Soil Analysis?

Start with the soil. How much do you have? Maybe it is only one or more available flower pots. Or a small part of the back lawn may have to suffice. Whatever amount of space you choose, if you are new at this, start small. You can always add on as experience dictates and time and space permit. There are many sources of good information on how to begin, but one I especially recommend is ECHO (www.echonet.org) if space is limited. They even have information for those who have only a porch or a rooftop available for growing food.

And when you start small, it is sometimes far more advantageous to use a consultant that can provide needed help to get started. Due to the product knowledge initially required and the small amounts needed for most gardens, it can sometimes be hard to find the proper materials, but with access to the internet now available, it is far easier than it used to be to locate those products.

For those who want to “go it on your own”, be sure to begin by having the soil tested. Use a detailed soil analysis, not just a test for pH, phosphate and potassium. There are many soil testing laboratories for this type of testing that one can find just by doing an Internet search. If interested, our company does testing for hundreds of certified organic farmers and gardeners, as well as natural, conventional and bio-dynamic growers every year. You will find our contact information at www.kinseyag.com. Please feel free to contact us about our services and the soil testing we advocate for gardens, lawns, vineyards, orchards, ranching and farming.
