Mitochondrial Health

In my practice, when a patient comes to see me with complaints of chronic fatigue, brain fog, weakness, memory loss, or cancer, I immediately think about how I can improve their mitochondrial function.

The three most effective methods that I have found for improving mitochondrial health are fasting, nutritional ketosis, and cold water exposure. Fasting and ketosis both work in the same manner whereby they shift the mitochondrial fuel source from glucose predominance to fat and ketone predominance.

The presence of ketones reduces all inflammatory chemicals, and creates new mitochondria in the cells. In addition, the brain prefers to use ketones as fuel over glucose. Cold water exposure has similar anti-inflammatory effects as nutritional ketosis, and also is a metabolic treatment which burns can lower glucose levels and help switch your cells into fat burning.
