Why it’s so important for Cancer patients to focus on their mitochondria

Cancer is a metabolic disease that begins with damaged mitochondria. It’s the damaged mitochondria which creates the abnormal genetics found in many cancer cells (not the other way around). Restoring mitochondria to a healthy state by switching the fuel source from glucose to fat not only creates new and healthier mitochondria, it promotes an environment where cancer cells can no longer be fed and begin to self destruct.

Autonomic Health

When a patient comes to see me with complaints of immune dysfunction, chronic pain, anxiety, or depression I immediately think about restoring their autonomic balance.

The nervous system is composed of the voluntary and involuntary subsystems. The involuntary nervous system is also known as the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is further split into two subsystems, the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. To put it simply, the sympathetic nervous system is responsible for ‘fight or flight’ responses, whereas the parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for ‘rest and relaxation’ responses.

In most cases, people are walking around with excessive sympathetic tone from anxiety, deadlines, and stressful environments. In my years of experience, I’ve come to find that in all chronic syndromes, whether they’re pain or autoimmune, there’s an element of post traumatic stress. This stress doesn’t have to be emotional, it can be physical. Their brain is in a constant hyper-vigilant state in which it’s ready to fight or flee at all times. A good example of this is whiplash. You get smacked from behind without any warning, and for the next several days to weeks, your brain tells the your neck muscles to contract and tighten which on one hand protects the spinal cord from further injury, but on the other hand can be extremely dysfunctional and inconvenient.

Reflex autonomic devices work by sending a seemingly endogenous signal from the periphery into the brain. This brings the brain’s attention back to the area of treatment, and signals that there is no longer danger that needs to be attended to. The reflex autonomic devices I use in my practice are SCENAR, Physiokey, and First TX. From these devices I’ve seen patients with 15+ years history of pain leave my office pain free, as if a miracle, but really it’s all from a subtle shift in their brain. I want to make it clear that the reflex autonomic devices aren’t even doing the healing themselves, they’re coaxing the body to restore homeostasis through balancing the autonomic nervous system.

I take pride in empowering my patients with the knowledge and capabilities of becoming masters of their own health, and not victims of their genetics or epigenetics.

The human body has immense healing capabilities, which need to be cultivated and encouraged in the right environment.
