Presented below is a description of the various levels of fluoride poisoning that are known in humans and animals. Acute lethal poisoning and many of the chronic ‘low’ level effects of fluoride are mediated by calcium binding by the fluoride ion, which is a known calcium chelator.

1.‘Low’ level fluoridation of municipal water at 1 ppm can cause well known alterations in teeth (enamel fluorosis) and bone structure, with elevated calcification of tendons and ligaments, and thyroid dysfunction, and other effects.

2. ‘Moderate’ exposure, such as long-term consumption of fluoridated water

causes increased hip fracture tendency, bone pain, and kidney and gall stones. Consumption of high fluoride water (including natural sources) at 8 ppm causes spinal deformity and shortened lifespan.

3. ‘Higher' exposure levels, such as during fluoridation overfeeds (100 ppm in water)

or accidental poisoning with concentrated industrial fluoride cause death before the above symptoms could ever develop. and this is responsible for major industrial use of fluoride as a rodenticide.

Solubility calculations indicate that the minimum fluoride concentration in the bloodstream that would theoretically decrease blood calcium below physiological levels is the same as the concentration actually measured in tissues of fluoride-poisoned victims, such as in cases of fluoridation overfeeds or other accidental fluoride intakes. Fluoride at such concentrations cause decreased beat rates in isolated heart cells in culture, consistent with the heart block observed in acute fluoride poisoning.

Consumption of fluoridated water causes the accumulation of fluoride in the bones, which in turn creates the formation of bones of poor quality with an altered crystal structure (National Research Council, Report on Fluoride in Drinking Water, National Academies of Science, Washington, DC. 2006). This process actually begins with the very first sip of fluoridated water and continues to worsen as it accumulates during life-long consumption of fluoridated water.

In 1963 the FDA wrote that fluoride is not a mineral nutrient, which means it is a contaminant of the blood; and that its addition into water is an uncontrolled use of an unapproved drug.
