Same happens with the innovative technology of full spectrum, penalized in terms of energy efficiency metrics. Even worse is that conventional LEDs have a lack of emission in the wavelengths needed for melanopic stimulus, visual acuity and proper pupillary response functioning.

New metrics in lighting have to be developed to take into account human health versus pure energy efficiency, that are arbitrary metrics. The purpose of human health and human sustainability has a much larger long-term impact on our economies than pure energy efficiency.

These were topics discussed at the 2018 USA “Lighting for Health and Wellbeing Conference” in Newport Beach, CA, where I was honored to present my work and research.

The specific topic of the effects of lighting in myopia was introduced, and we will discuss it in more detail in the next issue. Stay tuned.
