An American philosopher, Dr Thompson, asked Sivananda: “Have you seen God, Swamiji?”

“I see nothing but God!” replied the Master,

“In food I eat, in the water I drink, in the people I greet, in the animals I meet – and in you, Dr Thompson, I see nothing but God.”

On 14 July 1963, the great master Swami Sivananda left his body.

Here is an inspiring advice he once gave to a few of his disciples who taught that self-realization was rather a difficult if not an impossible thing to achieve:

“Never mind whether Self-realization comes or not. Put forth every effort at attaining ethical improvement to render yourselves perfect for the service of man.

See God in man. Look upon man as God. If your concept of God includes the idea that He is all-pervading, then why can't you see Him in all creatures?

What makes you hesitate in translating your belief into action? You will have to give up such notions that He is available only behind locked doors and closed eyes.

First feel His presence in everyone and everything as you serve; then see whether or not He shines of His own accord in the chambers of your heart.

When the heart is not yet free of all impurity and the lower nature rid of its dross, how can spiritual experience come to you? First root out egoism, anger, hatred, greed and duplicity, by sincere selfless service.

Even if you manage to do some little good to ten human beings, if you succeed in destroying one evil trait completely and develop fully a single noble virtue, feel certain that your life has not been lived in vain. Even this, ten people in a million hardly ever achieve.

Cheer yourselves up! Apply your heart and soul to this work. I guarantee that you will feel blessed and happy.” ~ Swami Sivananda

LIFE OF SWAMI

VISHNU-DEVANANDA

Swami Vishnu was born on December 31, 1927 in Nemmara, Kerala.

Swami Vishnu was a fearless and stubborn child. When these qualities were later on sublimated in the direction of spiritual goals, they became the cause of his great realization.

Meeting His Master

Swami Vishnu’s shared his first impressions about meeting Swami Sivananda: “There was no kind of a religious hypocrisy, no sitting on a tiger skin with ashes smeared all over his body. He had an extraordinary glow.”

Swami Vishnu got his initiation into sannyasa in 1948 and was appointed as a Hatha Yoga professor at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy. How did Swami Vishnu learn the ancient practices of yoga? In Swami Vishnu’s own words: “My Master touched me and opened my intuitive eye. All this knowledge returned to me from past lives.”

Swami Vishnu was Master Sivananda’s personal assistant.

Swami Vishnu’s teaching had the backing of the mighty spiritual energy of his guru Swami Sivananda: “He was behind me the moment I started teaching. Knowledge started pouring in. I knew that Sivananda was there behind me. The whole system (traditional system known today as Sivananda Yoga) has been brought completely from my past life experiences and made into a specific method.” Swami Vishnu-devananda
