Huskies Pull Out Overtime Win

The U of S Huskies hosted their rival Regina Rams on Friday at Griffith ’ s stadium in front of a huge crowd for their first game of the season . They kept the crowd on the edge of their seats winning in double overtime after a crucial field goal by Sean Stenger .
T h e Rams found the scoreboard early when they scored the first major taking the 7-1 lead after one . The Crowd cheered their Huskies on who regained the lead and were winning 14-10 before the half . Regina receiver Mitchell Picton hauled in 2 strikes from QB Noah Picton and the Rams had the 31-28 lead late in the fourth . Huskies QB Kyle Siemens moved the ball down the field as the team relied on kicker Sean Stenger who found the uprights with no time left on the clock and sent the game into overtime .
In the first overtime period , Ram ’ s receiver , Mitchell Picton hauled in a 12 yard pass for the score while Husky receiver , Colton Klassen made the 29 yard reception to tie things up again . In the second overtime the Huskies defense was stellar holding them at second down and forcing them to attempt the field goal . It was wide which opened the door for the Huskies . They took advantage of this and moved the ball within the Ram 5 yard line setting up the Stenger field goal . It was his night as he scored the 3 points

giving the Huskies the 41-39 win . Stenger went 6 for 7 in the game while Husky QB Kyle Siemens went 28-42 and 3 touchdowns . He connected with receiver Mitch Hillis 8 times over the course of the night . The Huskies travel to Alberta to face the Golden Bears this week . Their next home game is September 16 when the Calgary Dinos come to Griffiths .

Labour Day long weekend is always a great time for CFL football and that was true yet again this year . The week started off early with the Toronto A r g o n a u t s d e f e n d i n g their home turf against B . C . on Wednesday . My prediction was wrong as I thought the Lions would be out of gas after a short break and that the Argos would be ready to go after an extended week off . Like I said , I was wrong , the Lions came out with a victory despite a lack of offense . Toronto lost their first game of the week by a score of 16-13 . The second game of the week also lacked the big scores we are used to seeing on Labour Day weekend . Ottawa was still able to pull out a win over the Alouettes thanks to two interceptions and two fumble recoveries by the RedBlacks defence . Ottawa took a 19-14 victory on Thursday in Montreal . With the win , Ottawa becomes the team in the east with a win percentage above . 500 . On Sunday the Riders had yet another very close game . Darian Durant threw for 399 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions . It just wasn ’ t enough as the Blue Bombers scored a last-play field goal to make the final score 28-25 . The first game of the double header on Labour Day Monday was the Battle of Alberta . Edmonton rolled into Calgary looking to put an end to their perfect home record . It wasn ’ t looking good for the Eskimos as the Stamps came out with an 18-0 lead after the first quarter . The Eskies answered back in the second with 17 points of their own to Calgary ’ s 6 . Calgary would run away with the game after that with Bo Levi Mitchell throwing for 380 yards and two TD ’ s . Stampeders running back
Jerome Messam ran for
110 yards and two touchdowns as the Stamps move to an 8-1-1 record with a 45- 24 win at home . The most exciting game of the week would go to the Battle of Ontario as the Ti-Cats took on Toronto for the second game of the week . Toronto came out fired up after their loss to B . C . and took a 30- 17 score into the half-time break . After that the Argos short week caught up to them just as the Hamilton offense caught fire . Zach Collaros and the Ti-Cats put up 32 points in the second half as the double blue could only manage 6 . Hamilton took the win with a score of 49-36 . This week is Labour day rematch week and I really don ’ t think anything is going to change . However , I think it is just against the CFL gods for the Riders to lose the Labour Day Classic and the Banjo Bowl . So I ’ m going to take Sasky this week , along with Calgary , Hamilton , and B . C . I am now 20-5 in 2016 with my picks .
Week one in the NFL starts this week on Thursday with the defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos taking on Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers . Now the NFL is not my strong suit but I ’ ll give it a shot with some picks . There are up to 16 games a week so bear with me with this list of picks . For week one in the NFL my winners are Carolina , Atlanta , Buffalo , Houston , Green Bay , Kansas City , New Orleans , Cincinnati , Philadelphia , Minnesota , Seattle , Dallas , Indianapolis , New England , Washington , and finally San Francisco . Wow , that ’ s a lot of games , looks like my couch will be getting a work out from now on ! Hopefully yours does too as you enjoy the abundance of football being played every weekend from now until the Super Bowl .
