City Works on Transportation Master Plan

Shanine Sealey , Martensville Messenger
At the September 13th Committee of the Whole meeting , a discussion took place regarding the Transportation Master Plan ( TMP ) for the City of Martensville . The TMP will help to assess the existing traffic volumes , identify transportation issues within Martensville , compare existing land uses and project / model Martensville ’ s traffic into the future . “ The TMP will provide a comprehensive assessment of the existing traffic conditions and develop short-term ( 5 years ), medium term ( 10 years ) and long term ( 25 years ) improvement strategies to ensure that the City is ready for future growth ,” Joe Doxey , City of Martensville Director of Infrastructure and Planning , explained . Doxey continued to explain that in order to do this , a digital model of the transportation network and traffic volumes as it exists today would be created . The model will then be used to examine the data with existing traffic against current land uses and be calibrated to provide the recommended future transportation network improvements based on the City of Martensville ’ s Future Growth Plan . “ The model will provide a benchmark of City traffic , as well as contemplation and modelling of the impacts of the new interchange on our local streets . The plan will also provide for consideration to how pedestrian and cycling traffic interacts alongside all vehicular modelling .”
With this plan in place , Martensville residents can expect to see improvement plans and projects that will help to reduce existing traffic conflict areas . The City is also preparing how they will facilitate the transportation needs of residents as Martensville grows . Residents can also expect to see better financial planning for future upgrades , as well as less impact on the annual budget born by rate payers , due to the transportation planning prior to the development growth .
During the Committee of the Whole meeting , Doxey presented Council with the option to host a public open house for the TMP once the information has been collected . Plans for the initial open house are set for late September , or early October . “ This open house will be an opportunity for the findings of the data to be presented . The City will be looking for input from the public to identify transportation concerns , conflict or congestion areas ,” Doxey stated . The City is hopeful that the residents input will help reinforce the background data that will form the eventual plan . Once the report has been completed , there will be a second open house held , where the findings and final report will be presented and residents will have an opportunity to see how their input has shaped the future transportation plans for the City .
This plan is necessary as residents , as well as the City , have concerns based on the current transportation restrictions that are already taking place in areas throughout Martensville . “ Without quantifying the problem , developing some solutions and looking at what it will be like in the future ; traffic problems will only be exacerbated . Whether Martensville ’ s growth is rapid , or even-paced ; it will eventually occur , and will generate the traffic that comes with it ,” Doxey added . “ Having a plan for accommodating that traffic is imperative to maintaining a road network that is safe and efficient for our motorists , pedestrians , cyclists , etc .”

Martensville Gun Show Returns for Eighth Year

Shanine Sealey , Martensville Messenger
The Saskatoon Muzzle Loading Club Inc . ( SMLC ) hosted their 8th annual Saskatoon Gun Show at the North Ridge Centennial Community Centre September 17th and 18th . The event , which is very well attended each year , brings a variety of vendors and displayers from around the province to buy , sell and provide knowledge on guns and ammunition to those that attend . The event was held at the Prairieland Exhibition building before organizers decided to move the show to Martensville , which proved to be a wise decision . “ It has been eight successful years . It is always sold out for exhibitors ,
even when we have had cancellations the day of the show , we have people stepping in to exhibit ,” Murray Clare , of the Saskatoon Muzzle Loading Club , stated .
This year , there were a total of 110 tables , with 36 vendors . Approximately 1200-1300 people attended the event . “ We have had a hard time advertising , but we keep getting more and more vendors , and new vendors hearing about the show and wanting to take part .” Clare added .
