Joint-Use Schools Create Unique
Partnership
Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger
There is plenty of excitement province-wide
about the addition of the new joint-use schools planned
for Saskatoon, Regina, Martensville and Warman.
Construction began on the schools in September 2015
and Martensville’s Lake Vista School is moving along
at a steady pace as construction crews begin making
preparations for the winter months. As of right now,
construction on all six joint-use sites within Saskatoon,
Martensville and Warman is on schedule with completion
expected for summer 2017. “The construction has been
going very well. The construction crews are currently
working at getting the building enclosed so that they
can work just as hard as they currently are throughout
the winter months,” Larry Pavloff, Prairie Spirit School
Division Board of Education Chair, explained.
“It’s great to see how much work has been
completed and to get a sense of what the schools will look
like when classes offi cially begin,” Deputy Premier and
Education Minister Don Morgan said. “We would like
to thank our school division, municipal and construction
partners for their tireless efforts during the design and
construction phase to ensure that these schools will be
completed on-time and on-budget.”
“It’s hard to imagine that one year ago we were just
turning the sod on these school sites,” Greater Saskatoon
Catholic Schools Board of Education chair Diane Boyko
said. “Now, with structures in place, it’s easy for us to
imagine the sounds of construction being replaced with
the sounds of excited and enthusiastic children at school
in just one year’s time.”
Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools is currently
running a kindergarten program out of the Martensville
Civic Centre, which has 18 kindergarten students
registered, and 104 students from Martensville within their
Saskatoon programs. “It is a program that was requested
by Martensville parents that helps to create bonds and
friendship at a young age. There has been a lot of support
from the community and there is a dedicated volunteer
community that came together to push for a Catholic
school in Martensville. We are excited about supporting
a strong connection to home, school, community and
parish,” Boyko added.
With
Martensville
elementary
schools
currently over capacity, the new school will alleviate the
overcrowding that both Venture Heights and Valley Manor
schools have been experiencing in recent years. The
school will meet the needs of the growing community in
Martensville and will be benefi cial for both students and
staff. “We know that school is the heart of the community,
so the new school in Lake Vista will be a positive addition.
One of the things that many families looking to move to a
community fi rst look at is schools, and the availability of
good schools for their children, so we think it will be very
positive for Martensville,” Pavloff continued.
The schools will accommodate more than
11,000 students from Prekindergarten to Grade 8 at
full design capacity, which includes more than 5,700
students in Saskatoon, 2,100 students in Martensville and
Warman, and 3,300 students in Regina. Each joint-use
school will contain a 90-space child care centre as well
as community space. Joint-use schools are co-owned by
the public and Catholic school divisions. “There will of
course be a few different challenges such as coordinating
traffi c. It is a larger school site, but we are working
together with PSSD to coordinate,” stated Boyko.
The idea of a joint-use school is a new concept
for both Martensville and Warman, with joint-use schools
currently operating in Saskatoon and Regina. PSSD and
GSCS will work together to make the new arrangement
work for what is best for all students. “We are excited
about new schools coming to our communities. We know
that the communities are growing rapidly and the teachers
and staff within our schools that have been working under
crowded conditions have been doing a great job to make
sure that education is taking place and we commend all
of those people for the great work they have been doing,”
Pavloff added.
As the new year approaches, PSSD plans to
keep all parents informed regarding details such as how
the school will be organized, registration procedures,
and some of the day to day administration that is going
to be required in order to ensure that the PSSD schools
are distributed evenly. “There is a lot of information
that will need to be shared with parents and we will
be collaborating with them around that,” John Kuzbik,
PSSD Director of Education explained.
Since 2007, the province has committed
approximately $1.4 billion toward 65 major school
capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as
portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and
renewal.
