SPORTS U of S Brings Home Gold

The U of S Ladies Softball team coached by Cory Volk , Lauren Mills and Amber Rambley , travelled to Calgary for the Western Collegiate softball league playoffs this past weekend . They ended up first after the round robin and won the 1 versus 2 game against Regina that landed them into the final again against the U of R Cougars . It was an evenly matched game with the U of S team winning 4-3 bringing home the gold and the league championship . Kayla DeCorby of Martensville has been on the team for the past 6 years . She calls the game behind the plate and is playing her last year of softball for the university team . DeCorby is currently in the College of Education and is doing her interning in Martensville at Venture Heights school .
The softball program has been around for 12 years at the U of S and DeCorby has been there for half of them . They will participate in the National finals next weekend at Bob Van Impe Field . “ I think we have a great group of girls who have a great chance of bringing a National title to the University and Saskatoon ,” commented DeCorby , who is one of the team ’ s veteran players . Good luck to the U of S softball Team .

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

Information may not be current due to submission deadline
After week 15 in the CFL my picks are 26-11 and that ’ s not too shabby . The first game of the week saw the Edmonton Eskimos defeat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by a score of 40-26 . Edmonton came to life in the last four minutes of the second quarter scoring two TD ’ s in just three minutes to take a 24-10 lead into halftime . Winnipeg ’ s comeback fell short after a late Edmonton touchdown put the game out of reach . Both QB ’ s had terrific games throwing for over 300 yards and two touchdowns each but it was the running game for Edmonton and some penalty trouble for the Bombers that decided the game . On Saturday , game one of the double header was yet another Stampeders victory . The Stamps walked on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and even returned a late onside kick for a touchdown when the Ti-Cats were within reach . What ’ s worse for the Cats was the loss of their starting quarterback Zach Collaros late in the second quarter after a big hit by Calgary defensive lineman Charleston Hughes . Second string QB Jeremiah Masoli was unable to produce a touchdown drive until the 3:30 mark of the fourth quarter . The Stampeders took the win 36-17 and improved to a league best 12-1-1 and have not lost a game since the season opener against the B . C . Lions . If Calgary were to win out the rest of the season they would set a record for best season in the CFL . The second game of the double header yet again saw the west take over the east . The B . C . Lions came back from 30-27 in the fourth quarter against the Redblacks and made the final score 40- 33 after a last second interception return for a touchdown to win the game . The final game of the week showcased young Allouettes quarterback Rakeem Cato who threw for four touchdowns and 210 yards on Sunday against a stuggling Toronto Argonauts . Montreal took their fourth win of the season by a score of 38-11 . My picks for week 16 are Saskatchewan , Winnipeg , Calgary , and Edmonton .
The World Cup of Hockey finished up on September 29th as team Canada pulled out a thrilling victory against team Europe . The Europeans scored early in the first and dominated most of the game . It was a power play goal by Patrice Bergeron with 2:53 left in the game that got the Canadian fans roaring once again . The crowd got a little quieter when Canada got a penalty with just 1:50 remaining in regulation time . Then Canada ’ s hopes and dreams came true ; a short-handed goal by the pest himself Brad Marchand with 44 seconds left in the game . That was all the Canadians needed as Carey Price backed them to another international Championship . Canada is now undefeated in their last 16 international games dating back to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics . Mike Babcock is now officially in a league of his own becoming the first coach to win a Stanley Cup , World Championship , World Junior Championship , Olympic Gold , and a World Cup . When Babcock was asked how he did it he simply replied , “ great players ”.
Week four in the NFL finished with just three teams that haven ’ t lost . The Defending Super Bowl Champs without Peyton Manning are 4-0 , The Minnesota Vikings are 4-0 ( assuming they hold on to their 3rd quarter lead ), and the Philadelphia Eagles are 3-0 after they took their first bye week . The Brady-less Patriots have finally lost and not just that . The Pats were shut-out at home for the first time in their Stadiums history . New England was dominated by the Buffalo Bills in all aspects of the game . I guess the beginners luck is up in New England . The good news is , Tom Brady is back from his suspension this week and hopes to get the Pats back on track .
NHL preseason has begun and the regular season is just around the corner ! October 12th is opening day with four games on the schedule . Calgary takes on Edmonton in the Battle of Alberta , Toronto and Ottawa clash at the Canadian Tire Center , St . Louis heads into Chicago to face the Blackhawks , and in the late game , Los Angeles takes the short road trip to battle the Sharks in San Jose .
