Influenza (‘ Flu ’)

Submitted by Jolene Johnson , Pharmacist / Owner of The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Martensville
Influenza is a viral illness that is easily spread through coughing and sneezing . The flu season typically begins mid-October and lasts until around April . Most cases of the flu are mild , and symptoms go away within 10 days . Others can result in hospitalizations and death . Young children , the elderly , and people with other health conditions are at higher risk of complications from the flu .
Symptoms of the flu often include sudden onset of fever , cough , aches and pains , feeling very tired , and a headache . It can be spread to others before symptoms even appear . How can you prevent getting or spreading the flu ?
• Get the flu shot
• Wash your hands often with soap and water
• Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available
• Cough and sneeze into a tissue or your sleeve . Promptly throw used tissues into the garbage and wash your hands .
• Stay home from work / school / daycare if sick
• Do not visit hospitals or nursing homes if you are sick
Who should get the vaccination ? It is highly recommended for people at high risk of complications from the flu :
• People with a chronic health condition like asthma , diabetes , cancer , kidney disease , obesity , heart disease , or neurological conditions
• Age 65 and older
• Pregnant women
• People living in long term care facilities
• Kids age 6 months – 59 months ( under 5 years )
Also recommended for :
• Health care workers / students
• Members of the household and close contacts of people who are at high risk of complications
• Members of households expecting babies
• Daycare providers

• People working in essential services ( police , firefighters ) Everyone else , age 5 – 64 years , should be vaccinated .
Who should not get the vaccine ?
• Babies younger than 6 months
• People with a history of severe allergic reaction to the influenza vaccine How can you treat the flu ? Because it is a virus , antibiotics do not work against the flu . You can take over-the-counter acetaminophen ( Tylenol ) and / or ibuprofen ( Advil ) for fever , muscle aches and sore throat . Be very careful when taking products that contain a combination of medications . Acetaminophen is already in many of them , and it is easy to accidentally get too much . Ask your health care professional for advice when needed . Do not give aspirin to kids and teenagers under 20 years because of the associated risk of developing Reye ’ s syndrome .
About the vaccine - The injectable vaccine cannot cause the flu , because it does not contain any live viruses . It is very safe . It is injected into the muscle on the outside of the upper arm . Some common but mild side effects include a sore arm , low-grade fever , and headache that may last 1-4 days .
Where can you get the vaccination ? The publicly funded program begins Oct 31st . With a valid Sask . Health Card , you can get the flu shot for free at :
• Participating pharmacies for people age 9 and up . The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Martensville will be giving flu shots beginning November 1st , 2016
• Public influenza clinics
• Participating doctor ’ s offices
When you get the flu shot , it not only protects YOU , but also those around you who may not be able to fight the virus if they should become infected . ( Source : www . saskatchewan . ca )
