Shanine Sealey , Martensville Messenger
News of the terrifying and disturbing incident that took place in Martensville earlier this month quickly spread throughout the community . Lance Roberts shared a portion of his story as a warning to others within to remind them to lock their doors before going to bed at night , as his family learned this lesson the hard way .
At 5:01am on October 12th , Roberts awoke to a noise in the bedroom where he and his wife were asleep . Thinking it was one of his children , ages 6 and 3 , he opened his eyes to see a man crouched at the foot of their bed . Reacting as most husbands and fathers would , Roberts immediately sprang into action and his protective instinct kicked in . After a tussle , the man escaped the home and Roberts contacted the police , who located the man within 20 minutes in the basement of a neighbor ’ s house . Upon his initial reaction , and a dark bedroom , Roberts was unable to see who the intruder was at the time , however was later informed that it was a man that had been living with their neighbors across the street for the past month ; a man that they had seen on numerous occasions and had even waved to from time to time . “ When we went back into our bedroom , we discovered that he had went through my wife ’ s drawers and saw that he had taken my wife ’ s bikini ’ s out and had them underneath where he was laying ,” Roberts stated . “ I forgot to lock the door and this is the result of it . It could have been prevented by doing that . I won ’ t ever go to bed without locking doors again .”
According to the 24-year-old suspect , he had been drinking and was not aware of what he was doing at the time . This response did not sit well with Roberts , or his wife , so they took it upon themselves to do a little research . After contacting some mutual acquaintances , they learned that the suspect had a history of breaking into women ’ s homes and touching himself inappropriately while they slept . They took the information they had learned to the police and as of Wednesday , October 19th , the suspect , who is from North Battleford , was charged with three charges including Break and Enter , Mischief and Unlawful Entry and has a November 2nd court date scheduled .
When asked what advice he would provide based on his experience , Roberts stated , “ Make sure your doors are locked , and I don ’ t want to say don ’ t trust anyone , but you never know who is out there . Be safe , take precautions , and even if it is something minor , report it to the police and follow your instincts .”
