MFD Hosts Annual Open House

The Martensville Fire Department hosted their annual ‘ Fire Prevention Week Open House ’ on Wednesday , October 12th . This year ’ s theme was “ Don ’ t Wait - Check the Date ! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years ”. With this theme , the MFD advises that you test smoke alarms every month by pressing the test button to be sure the alarm is working . If the alarm chirps , it is a warning that the battery is low , so replace the battery right away . Make sure you know how old all of the smoke alarms are in your home . To find out how old a smoke alarm is , look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm , and if it is over ten years old , it is time to replace it .
A large number of people attended the open house and took the opportunity to enjoy the hotdogs and hamburgers barbequed by the volunteer firefighters . While there , the public was invited to view the fire equipment and many children had fun climbing on the fire trucks . “ Fire Prevention night was very successful . We had a great turn out and I think everyone enjoyed themselves , especially the kids . Sparky was out to help spread the message to check your smoke detectors . We would like to thank everyone that came out to help make our night a success ,” MFD Fire Chief Kurtis Dyck said .
The MFD had information on display , along with various equipment used for both training exercises and emergency calls . The Martensville EMO Coordinator Tracy Wilson-Gerwing handed out information about fire safety , along with fun fire related items such as fire hats

to the children . Unfortunately , due to cooler weather this year , the ‘ Jaws of Life ’ demonstration that the MFD had planned had to be cancelled . “ I just wanted to say a HUGE thanks to the Martensville Fire Department for their open house ! Thanks for taking the time to show my son around the trucks , even if he is only one . He had a blast ! Such a great event ! Thank you ,” Local resident Kimberley Smith commented on Facebook .
To date , the MFD has responded to approximately 280 calls this year , including fire , motor vehicle accidents and Emergency Medical Service . If you are looking for information about volunteering with the fire department or about Fire Prevention Week please call the fire hall at 306-934-5822 .
